How Do Your Values Align With Your Financial Planning?

Do your personal values align with your financial planning? This is a question that many have not asked or been advised on. Many advisers still focus solely (or for the most part) on investment strategies and yielding what they think will be the best investment return for the client. Although this is still an important part of one’s financial planning, there are many other things that should be taken in consideration, including how your values align with what is most important to you in life.

In the world of investing, an adviser’s value proposition can be easily measured by returns in dollars and cents, but a question I believe one should ask and think about is whether or not you are getting the best “return on life”. Many tend to think “Should I be saving more?” or “Can I really spend this?” Both of these questions are important to keep in mind, but how do you really know the answers to these? A good investment strategy can start to help answer these, but it is ongoing planning that helps execute the final decisions made on these questions.

A real life example I have seen firsthand where planning helped make the clear-cut decision is one regarding charitable giving. In this particular situation, the person had a goal to give to a charity something that has been needed for years, but did not know if, when or how much they could give. By evaluating their situation and using various planning strategies that aligned with their values, this person was not only able to give more than they thought they could, they were also able to give sooner, fulfilling the long time need of the charity. They were also able to fulfill their long time goal, which they didn’t even know would be possible without planning.

In all, I think a key question consumers should be asking themselves is “Am I getting ongoing financial planning advice that not only takes my money into consideration, but aligns with the goals and values that help me live my best life?” In the example mentioned above, you will notice the goal was accomplished not by yielding a high investment return, but rather by implementing a smart strategy that the person was financially comfortable with. Discussing this with an Evansville fiduciary financial planner can help identify and accomplish these types of goals and make sure your money is really going towards what you value.
